Re: lsusb not working-nothing listed
I thought I had established that I was using centoOS as when I type tail /etc/redhat-release I get
[trixbox1.localdomain ~]# tail /etc/redhat-release
CentOS release 5.5 (Final)
and
[trixbox1.localdomain ~]# cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.6.18-164.11.1.el5 (mockbuild@builder16.centos.org) (gcc version 4.1.2 20080704 (Red Hat 4.1.2-46)) #1 SMP Wed Jan 20 07:39:04 EST 2010
I tried to follow the instructions in the link above and think I must almost have got it right but nothing happens,
[trixbox1.localdomain ~]# ./getinfo.sh basic
Collecting CentOS system information for basic questions.
Presumably it shouldn't take long. I waited a while but got nothing and pressed ctrl c. should something have happen? a responce?
It says it saves the information to a temporary file. will this be stored in the directory that I ran the getinfo.sh from or somewhere else?
more information if it helps
[trixbox1.localdomain ~]# uname -a
Linux trixbox1.localdomain 2.6.18-164.11.1.el5 #1 SMP Wed Jan 20 07:39:04 EST 2010 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

Re: lsusb not working-nothing listed
That kernel belongs to CentOS 5.3 or so - perhaps 2 years old. I'd start by running yum update to get the latest and see if it helps. If it tells you there is no newer one then check your /etc/yum.conf and /etc/yum.repos.d/* files for exclude= lines.

Re: lsusb not working-nothing listed
I tried to run yum update but it told me there was a problem and suggested yum update --skip-broken
I did this and it ended with
Skipped (dependency problems):
c-ares.i386 0:1.6.0-5.el5
I tried running yum update again to see if there where still problems and this is the message
[trixbox1.localdomain ~]# yum update

Re: lsusb not working-nothing listed
For now I would just add an exclude= line for sipsak and c-ares then start a new thread about how to fix those later.
Did this update your kernel? If so did it help with the USB problem?

Re: lsusb not working-nothing listed
Thanks for your advice
was previously centOS 5.5 it's now 5.6 I guess this indicates that it's been updated.
I don't understand where I should add the exclude line.
The usb problem remains the same.

That just means that one single package could have been installed - centos-release. Please run `uname -r` and see what that tells you. If the update of the kernel succeeded then it should say something like 2.6.18-238.19.1.el5

Still ancient. You need to find out what's happening here as it's probably the same thing that's causing your usb not to work. Try running
rpm -qa kernel\*
and see if the newer ones are even installed. If they're not then check /etc/yum.conf and /etc/yum.repos.d/*.repo and see if those files contain any exclude= lines to stop the kernel from being updated. You also need to find out if any of the functionality of your sever is provided by the kernel you are running - I seem to remember you have an elastix repo configured.

You have exclude=kernel* in several stanzas in the files you quoted above. You won't receive any kernel updates while those are there. No idea if there is a specific reason why they should be present but the worst thing that can happen is that you remove them, update and reboot and something fails or stops working at which point you reboot again and choose your current kernel from the list and boot up on that.
installonly_limit=5 tells yum to keep the latest 5 copies of kernel-x.y.z installed. If you install a 6th then it will remove the oldest one to make room. The kernel packages are listed automatically in 'installonlypkgs=' list so they are not updated but installed in parallel if a new version comes along - precisely so that you can keep multiple copies of the kernel installed and fall back to an older one if the latest fails to boot.
I think it might be interesting to see the output from `rpm -qi kernel` to see if the current kernel you are running is built by CentOS or by trixbox. If it's built by CentOS (i.e. Build Host says *.centos.org) then the new one stands a better chance of just working than if trixbox have taken the source RPM and rebuilt it with unspecified changes in it.
