For those interested,

Centos 5.2 64 bit runs on the new intel D945GCLF2.

This is a second generation of the intel atom mini itx board. The cpu is a atom 330, dual core cpu with HT. A grand total of 4 cpu's show up.
The network card has been upgraded to GB networking ( realtek RTL8111). Standard driver that comes with centos 5.2 does not work, but the one from realtek's website does and is straith forward to install.

The board fits a 1U casing with standard fans, which are low profile now.

Output of dmesg and lspci -vv

Linux version 2.6.18-92.el5 (mockbuild@builder10.centos.org) (gcc version 4.1.2 20071124 (Red Hat 4.1.2-42)) #1 SMP Tue Jun 10 18:51:06 EDT 2008

Thanks; I've been leaning away from the VIA C7 to the Atom so it's nice to know that CentOS mostly works :).

Edit: Did you install from a SATA DVD drive? I'm wondering whether that will work, or if it needs to use PATA. I'm thinking of just buying one of the MSI Wind barebones desktop machines and they only have SATA as far as I can see.

I guess PATA or SATA would not matter. But in this case I installed from a PATA LG DVD drive.

Hello,

@zeehond: are you able to control speed of the fan installed on chipset?

I had no problem with recognising the sensor, but changing the value of speed control, ends without possitive result.

Hi folks,
I found this thread by searching for "Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU 330 @ 1.60GHz" (extracted from dmidecode output).
I am having a bit of an issue with lm_sensors. All I get back from it is:
[root@acoustix ~]# sensors
smsc47m1-isa-0680
Adapter: ISA adapter
fan1: 1780 RPM (min = 1280 RPM, div = 4)
fan2: 7021 RPM (min = 1280 RPM, div = 4)

[root@acoustix ~]#

Sysinfo:
2.6.18-92.1.22.el5.centos.plus x86_64 GNU/Linux

I believe you guys got that working, right?
Any idea what my issues are?
Thanks in advance,

3KH

I ended up installing Ubuntu rather than CentOS on my Atom system as it's solely for MythTV, and lm-sensors on there definitely gives me temperature and voltage readings. So the latest versions of lm-sensors support it, but I don't know whether the CentOS version does.

Movieman,
Doing any hi-def MythTV on your Atom board? The video systems on the various mini-ITX boards has been a big question mark for me. Can it do 1920x1080 without hiccups?

No; unfortunately mplayer is still single-threaded when playing H.264, so it can't manage 1080 playback without dropping lots of frames. I don't think it will have a problem once they add multithreading support though, as it did fairly well with some 1080 files I downloaded; I don't know what codec those used, but I think it may have been Xvid. Well, technically I believe it can do multithreaded decoding of some types of H.264 files, but not the ones that I've been trying; I had one CPU at 85%, one at 6% and two at 0%.

I only had one 720p file (a movie trailer that I downloaded ages ago) and that did play OK.

Edit: the other issue is that the Intel video drivers don't currently support TV-out properly on Linux, but I'm going to plug it into an LCD TV via the VGA input so that doesn't really matter to me.

Bummer. Those mini-ITX boards sure look interesting. I guess it'll get there on the HD front eventually.

I believe there's a way to get a Windows multithreaded H.264 codec to run on Linux for 1080 playback on dual-core Atoms, but I haven't looked into that yet; I'm hoping that mplayer fixes their code before I have to! I don't think the single-cores have the CPU power to do more than 720, even multithreaded.

Atoms don't have CPU fans.

If you mean the chipset fan, the best solution is to either replace the heatsink with a better one, or replace the fan with something less noisy: I use one of these and it works fine:

Does the D945GCLF2's chipset support (supply) the HPET (High Precision Event Timer) as both the kernel and asterisk.

Your output shows...
time.c: Using 3.579545 MHz WALL PM GTOD PIT/TSC timer.

I'd be curious to see the outputs from both

cat /sys/devices/system/clocksource/clocksource0/available_clocksource

and

cat /sys/devices/system/clocksource/clocksource0/current_clocksource

If so, is/are there any modifications needed from a standard Centos 5.3 ISO install.

I thinking of moving to this board as well. We do a fair bit of MeetMe conferencing and the better the timer source the better asterisk-everything works.

Thanks,

From the intel doc's, there is BIOS setting...

Chipset Configuration: Enable HPET

Not -- yet -- having one of these boards, this is the best I can offer.

The trick is to then see if CentOS "sees" it and uses it and then if asterisk does too.

/S

Not sure if there was a question about the CentOS kernel there but perhaps this will be useful to know --

$ grep -i hpet /boot/config* | grep 128
/boot/config-2.6.18-128.1.14.el5:CONFIG_HPET_TIMER=y
/boot/config-2.6.18-128.1.14.el5:CONFIG_HPET_EMULATE_RTC=y
/boot/config-2.6.18-128.1.14.el5:CONFIG_HPET=y
/boot/config-2.6.18-128.1.14.el5:# CONFIG_HPET_RTC_IRQ is not set
/boot/config-2.6.18-128.1.14.el5:# CONFIG_HPET_MMAP is not set

I'm getting ATA subsystem errors when trying to install CentOS on the D945GCLF, the same board being discussed here but with an Atom 230, the single core version. Sorry I don't have exact transcripts of the error messages (they scroll by awfully quick), but I was able to capture the follow interesting bits with my camera:

----- snip! -----
status: { DRDY ERR }
error: { ICRC ABRT }
soft resetting link
failed to IDENTIFY (I/O error, err_mask=0x2)
revalidation failed (errno=-5)
failed to recover some devices, retrying in 5 secs
----- snip! -----

another part I was able to capture is:

----- snip!-----
soft resetting link
configured for UDMA/33 [Remember, this is a SATA bus]
EH complete
warning at drivers/ata/libata-sff.c:1317/ata_sff_hsm_move()

[Then the contents of a trace that are cut off]
----- snip! -----

If further details of these error messages will help debug, I'll go to greater length to provide the precise output of a dmesg.

I get these same messages with several different changes:
- CentOS 5.3 x86_64 or CentOS 5.0 i386 (the two DVDs I had already downloaded)
- Drives:
- 2x Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA drives
- Each WD individually
- Seagate ST31000340NS ES.2 1TB (borrowed from work to see whether it was the WD drives causing the problem)
- I've swapped out several different SATA cables too
- Lite-On SOHD 16P9S DVD-ROM or NEC ND-1300A DVD-RW. Both are PATA
- GEIL 1GB DDR2 GX21GB5300X, or NANYA 512MB DDR2 NT512T64U88A0BY-37B (pulled from a Dell desktop)

No matter what I swap out, the error always happens.

About the only bits I haven't swapped out are:
- Motherboard/CPU
- Power Supply
- Chassis

I've done extensive Googling on these error messages with no luck, and looking for common problems with CentOS and Intel's Atom motherboards the only things I can find are about the network drivers.

Has anyone else had similar problems? Do I just have a bad mother board that needs to be replaced? Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

-Mark

If anyone else is interested. I have just installed CentOS 5.3 as a server on the Intel D945GCLF2(same), no issues so far. Sound driver problem seems to be fixed. After I install more, ill post if any issues.
