I have encountered 2 problems. One is display-related and the other is a Secure Shell (ssh) keyboard mapping problem:

1. Garbled graphical lines showned on display

When I go to Setup Utility
[root@ct41server1 acc]# setup,
I get a garbled display. Graphical lines (vertical and horizontal) are replaced т character ie. the following:

ттттттттттЄ Choose a Tool ттттттттттт[3;18Hт т
т Authentication configuration т
т Firewall configuration т
т Keyboard configuration т
т Mouse configuration т
т Network configuration т
т Printer configuration т
т System services т
т Timezone configuration т
т X configuration т
т т
т тттттттттттт[30m тттттттт[30m т
т т Run Tool т т Quit т т
т тттттттттттт тттттттт т
т т
т т
тттттттттттттттттттттттттттттттттттт

Is this because I am using the wrong character set? What do I do to rectify this?

2. when I log in remotedly using Secure Shell (ssh), I noticed that the Delete and Backspace can only be used to backspacea delete function. I cannot delete forward, only backwards. When I use a local terminal, this problem doesn't arise. I don't have this problem when I log on to a Redhat 7.3 server. I would like to know what is it that I left out in the CentOS server.

Can anyone please tell me how I can fix the 2 above problems.

Thank you so very much.

I re-installed Cent)S 4.1 but the same two problem continues to plague me. I took a look at .bashrc to see if I could changed ^H and ^? but it didn't help.

I also searched the net for a solution to fix the graphical character code but have not found any answers.

Is there any kind soul out there who have encountered this problem and have a fix? Your comments are most appreciated.

Thanks

Your language is most likely some flavor of UTF-8
to verify 'echo $LANG' in a terminal.

export to something other than utf-8, for example, instead of en_US.UTF-8, just use en_US

export LANG="en_US"
then run your command again. this should help. as for the busted ssh delete key, it's most likely a bad terminal value. echo $TERM to see what you're using. I've only seen this when connecting to/from a ppc machine.

Thank you Evolution for pointing me to the en_US.UTF-8 setting. That allowed to me check the problem. Sure enough exporting en_US fixed the problem.

Thank you.

Regarding the problem with Delete behaving like Backspace under VI editor when logging in via SSH, I check echo $Term which showed me VT100. I tried modifying keyboard setting (ie delete sends backspace and backspace sends delete) on my SSH ver 3.2.9 but the problem is still occurring. Any idea how I can fix the delete key to delete forward instead of backwards???

Thank you again for responding..

Whatever you're using to connect to the linux box would appear to be broken. Your terminal is acting exactly like it's supposed to for vt100. You should use something (putty for windows side, or xterm, rxvt, Eterm, aterm etc for linux ) and use the appropriate TERM value there. If you're already using putty, set it to xterm or rxvt, and your problem will go away.

Dear Evolution

Thank you for responding. I am using SSH (SSHSecureShellClient-3.2.9) academic copy (free). It works well when I am connecting to other Redhat 7.3 servers but when I connect to CentOS 4.1, the delete key doesn't response well.

However, you are correct in your assessment. I downloaded putty and I did not have any problems with backspace and delete.

May I ask if you know how I can fix my SSHSecureShellClient-3.2.9 to work. I am use to it and would love to continue using it by default.

My SSH client is set to vt100. I tried setting it to xterm as you suggested but it doesn't help. Should I change settings on my linux box? If yes, where/how do I do that?

Thank you.

It is not a problem with the linux box, but with the terminal info included in your ssh client. I have no idea about the client you're using. You may check to see if there's an updated version or if they have a fix on their site. I've never used it. I'm a fan of putty because it doesn't require any install, so I can simply keep it on a usb stick and use it anywhere.
