Welcome to the CentOS fora.
# yum grouplist | grep -Ei "gnome|kde" GNOME Desktop Environment GNOME Software Development KDE (K Desktop Environment) KDE Software Development XFCE-4.4 So: # yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment" or # yum groupinstall "KDE (K Desktop Environment)" or # yum groupinstall "XFCE-4.4" Need the [extras] repo installed for XFCE. Please read about Installing Software, and Repositories, and note the warnings and advice about installing and configuring the yum priorities plugin. Non-core repos should have a higher numeric value, which is a lower priority. Lower is "better" as in golf scores. You may also want to read about VNC or NX. |

Done this, and no erros what so ever.
So i run startx and received the fallowing error messages: xauth: creating new authority file /root/.serverauth.2178 xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): no server "X" in PATH Use the --option, or make sure that /usr/bin is in your path and that "X" is a program or a link to the right type of server for your display. Possible server names include: Xorg X.org displays xinit: Server error Im new at this so i'm sorry if something simple i have to do and didnt do yet.. |

If you are using a virtual machine through a ssh connection as you wrote in your initial message, then there's no way startx could work. Set up a NX or VNC remote desktop connection instead. |

I installed the CentOS 5.2 on a physical machine, not in a VM. I'm trying several tests, like install X from a server without it, update kernel, etc. Till now i'm having some newbie problems that i didn't had with other distros. I installed via yum (system-config-display). When i try to use it, my screen turned off. I thought, I could choose some things with that tool, like type of monitor, or depth. Sure i'm doing something wrong. Maybe I have to insert some arguments when I try to run the tool in text mode, but i didn't have much time to do it. ![]() |

CentOS 5.2 has been obsolete for quite some time now. Always install the latest version available to avoid problems. Try doing an full GUI install with 5.4. https://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=22004&forum=37&post_id=88578#forumpost88578 |

Not totally sure I understand your question, but it is possible that 5.2 does not support your hardware and 5.4 will. If you still have problems with the latest version, then we can get into how to debug them.

I'm totally new to centos, however I´ve used ubuntu and fedora, I had the same problem, I installed elastix 1.5 wich comes with centos 5.2, i didn't have gui, i did what is indicated in earlier posts :
# yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment" and then: # yum groupinstall "X Window System" after this I run "startx" and that´s all, I have a gnome desktop environment |
