5.3 to 5.4 upgrade - No Video Output

This morning, I ran yum update and discovered it was an upgrade from 5.3 to 5.4. Nice, but.... The upgrade went well, no errors, did a reboot to reset everything and now no video output. Good thing I did full system disk backup prior to the upgrade. I am wondering if anyone else has this problem?

I will attempt to boot from a CD/DVD but just thought I would check here first.

Regards and thanks for your time.

No video output from where or how? I just watched a video from cbsnews
CBS News- CDC interview

Looked just fine to me... I upgraded to 5.4 a couple of nights ago.

Funny.

What I meant is the system is up and running but I have no video output to the monitor/console. I can connect to it from another box via a web browser and httpd is running.
Aside from having a video card that may have decided to retire early, I am just exploring the possibilities of its drivers not having being updated or being fouled up. That was the intent of my question.

Thanks anyhow, I will keep looking and possibly test with an old video card.

There are two pieces of information you haven't yet provided -- the Make/Model of the video card and the driver used with it.

I have the same problem. The last string seen on the display - "udev [OK]", then the display goes out. In single user mode kde starting correctly. I tried to install again with DVD. Display went out on the stage of launching graphical installer.
Returned on 5.3, works fine.
Integrated graphics controller Intel 915GL.

I just completed the upgrade from 5.3 to 5.4 today (via yum update) and while it seemingly completed without any errors, upon boot up my monitor went into sleep mode and would not come back on. I have the same integrated Intel video card (i.e., 82915G.) To correct this, I had to boot up and do "upgrade" with a 5.4 install DVD. Seems to be working fine now. The only thing I lost was my fstab, but I had good backups of everything.

Here is some additional information about my system:

Dell DV051 motherboard
BIOS A04 (04/04/06)
Intel Pentium 4 @ 3GHz - 64-Bit technology EM64T
Chipset Intel Grantscale - G i915GV

Video adapter: Intel 82915G/GV/910GL Express chipset family; 3D accelerator GMA900

Note that warm reboot change nothing but cold reboot gets me to the udev - OK part then, the monitor also goes into sleep mode.

As for the video driver used, I never checked that, Centos took care of that part and it was working fine until this last upgrade.

Thank you.

One thing you could try . . .

Re-boot the system and as soon as you see the grub splash screen, interrupt the boot process by pressing any key. Now select the kernel-2.6.18-128.7.1.el5 and boot it.

Does the display now operate correctly with the older kernel? If yes, then it is a kernel problem and a bug report would be appropriate. If no, then the problem is elsewhere.

Thanks for your input!

I tried that, last evening, to no avail. Did not matter which previous kernel I selected, the end result is the same.
Video goes to sleep after displaying the UDEV [OK] line. So, we know the video card is working.

Looking for any suggestions/advices as to where to look next.

Thanks,

Serge

Have you tried booting to runlevel 3? If that works then try "system-config-display" as root.

Hi,

I found the problem at my side.

I use the propriatery ati driver and this cause the problem. I restore to the xorg server, driver from release 5.3 and restore also the xorg.conf. With this I can start x and after yum update all works well. After this I reinstall the ATI driver.

thanks for help

regards Dietmar

Hi Dietmar

Would you mind giving details of how you got xorg video restored? I don't know how to do it. Thanks

Not sure the way Dietmar did it would be the recommended approach, but sometimes "whatever works". Are you also using the ATI proprietary driver? Have you tried booting to runlevel 3 and running "system-config-display" as root?

Might want to have a look at http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/ConfigureNewVideoCard

You really have a different situation - different hardware/driver. If the suggestions in post #16 don't help you should start a topic of your own.

My i915G failed to work after upgrading from 5.3 to 5.4, using the "intel" driver. The "i810" driver will work, but it's not the preferred driver for this chipset. I managed to get the intel driver working by disabling DDC in /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "intel"
Option "DDC" "false"
EndSection

Update...

I booted at run level 3 after editing my boot file with Grub. I ran the following command: /sbinlspci -m

The following was what I found for my video controller:

00:02.0 "VGA compatible controller" "Intel corporation" "82915G/GV/910GL integrated graphics controller" -r 04 "Dell" "Unknown device 01C4"

So, next chance I have, I will try to figure out which driver to use from the command: rpm -qa xorg-x11-drv\*
It would be nice not having to make back flips to get this to work. Everything was working well until this latest update/upgrade.

Thanks,

Serge
