We are seeing a build failure of the VMWare modules with kernel-2.6.18-164.2.1.el5.plus.x86_64

make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/kernels/2.6.18-164.2.1.el5.plus-x86_64'

make: *** [vmnet.ko] Error 2

Building with the plain kernel-2.6.18-164.2.1.el5.x86_64 works fine.

This happens for me on VMWare 6.5.3 or VMware-server-2.0.1.

Anyone else getting this?

I am running VMWare Server 1.0.x on kernel-2.6.18-164.2.1.el5.plus.x86_64 without a problem but have yet to try VMWare 6.5.3.

There is a problem with VMWare 6.5.3 and the plus kernel. I will try to find the page that had the replacement vmnet.tar file. It was from the vmware forums IIRC...

Edit, this looks like it could have been it:

I was kind of worried that this suggested that the "plus" kernel had drifted from being upstream compatible, but with just more stuff in it.

I just confirmed this problem myself with VMWare Workstation 6.5.3. Thanks, pjwelsh, for the note and link.

The centosplus kernel is, and has been, "drifted" from the distro kernel because it has a number of drivers/options turned on. It also has some patches. As a result, its compilation includes part of the source code that would not be used by the distro kernel. I suspect it is one of those that now have conflicts with the VMware's module.

I confirmed the latest (soon to be released) cplus kernel 2.6.18-164.6.1 also suffers the same problem. This version now eliminated the nfs4 patch that was applied to 2.6.18-164.2.1 (because the patch is now in the distro kernel). I was hoping that patch was the culprit but this was not the case.
