installing ati radeon hd 3650 driver

I'm somewhat new to Centos, but I've gone through some other linux versions and I was wondering how I can install my video card driver. I have a centos 6.2 x64 version, on a intel core 2 duo machine with ati radeon hd 3650. I've downloaded the driver from their site and installed it in text mode, but after reboot it seems to work worse than the previous generic one which was quite decent for a generic video driver.
So now I'm trying to find out what I should do next in order to finish what I've started or if it's too difficult to do that (i.e. to recompile the kernel), to switch back to the previous video driver.
Can anyone help?
Thanks

Welcome to the CentOS fora. Please see the recommended reading for new users linked in my signature.

You could have probably saved yourself some pain by asking first. It is very seldom necessary to build a custom kernel any more, and using the manufacturer's video drivers directly tends to be quite problematic. Better to use the ELRepo kABI tracking drivers built from the same sources. See kmod-fglrx.
