Re: Bootable HD Backup with Incremental Updates

Yeah EXT4...or any other FS should be fine. Look over the doc and make sure that your snaps are not dependant on your current LVs. http://tldp.org/HOWTO/LVM-HOWTO/snapshots_backup.html Also I would consider your backup method invalid until tested, as with any backup method. Its best to run into rest...

Re: Bootable HD Backup with Incremental Updates

No, it does not backup /boot. Boot does not contain important data. Here is a 3 step restore guide for LVM. 1) reinstall CentOS - this will recreate /boot 2) run updates, this will update your kernel 3) replace the current LVs with your backups LVs now that /boot has been rebuilt for you I am, not f...

Re: SMART Monitoring for NVME Storage

Fair point, yes there is usually more data. I have seen similar output when polling SMART info from HDDs behind hardware RAID controllers. I'm not sure if that's all there is for the output for this particular drive or NVMe is causing it to show much less. This takes us back to using the OEM tool - ...

Re: SMART Monitoring for NVME Storage

SMART really isn't the best for monitoring SSDs. Its great for HDDs as the vendors have mostly standardized the attributes. If you are going to use SMART for SSDs , the vendor's tool will be the most accurate. Keep in mind that even for HDDs, which SMART is more reliable on that it is only about 80%...

Re: Hardening CentOS 7

Some additional information for hardening: I recommend at least setting up the base profiles for SELinux https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/SELinux Also, here is a detailed guide on hardening : https://highon.coffee/blog/security-harden-centos-7/ ..and another which is more broad. https://linux-audit.co...

Re: GFX related hangs

I resolved this by switching the graphic card to an old QuadroFX 4600.

This appears to be a conflict with nouveau and the Geforce GT710.
I was unable to reproduce the issue in Windows. This is now resolved, I may at some point post a bug report or just not use the $30 card.

Re: Bootable HD Backup with Incremental Updates

I would do periodic (monthly or bi monthly) full image backups, with more frequent file-level backups. Most of the mentioned applications will have specific backup instructions, for example : https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201539237-Backing-Up-Plex-Media-Server-Data Here is the answer to ...

Re: Bootable HD Backup with Incremental Updates

StorageCraft ShadowProtect SPX works very well, but it is very expensive. Veeam is nearly as good, but much cheaper. Free/ Open source solutions are already built into CentOS such as LVM/ZFS snapshots. Mondo Rescue is another Free/ Open source solution. There is a guide for Mondo here https://www.te...
