New kernel not showing up in menu after first intial update

I did a kickstart image of a new CentOS 7 workstation. I"m most familiar with legacy BIOS installs; not so much with UEFI BIOS installs. This install was a UEFI BIOS (newer hardware doesn't seem to like legacy BIOS all that much). After the initial install I wanted to add the following parameters to...

Is the .autorelabel file required in CentOS 7?

I noticed every one of my systems has a /.autorelabel file on it. Selinux is disabled on all of them, so I don't see a need for the file system to spend time relabeling everything on every reboot. Can that file be removed without any negative effects? EDIT - I tried removing the file on one system a...

X11 access to remote hosts

Our security department runs Nessus to scan for vulnerabilities (on CentOS 7). One ding that keeps coming up is regarding "x11 unauthenticated access" - Tenable plugin ID 19948. The users often share x11 screens to collaborate with each other, and they've got some monitoring things going on where th...

Re: how to mount partitions in single user mode in order to run xfs_repair on partition

Both of those commands (vgchange -ay and lvchange -ay) generate these messages

/proc/mounts: get_sysfr_dir fopen failed - no such file or directory
/proc/devices: fopen failed no such file or directory

how to mount partitions in single user mode in order to run xfs_repair on partition

I have what appears to be a corrupted file system on /var and I want to run xfs_repair on that partition. /var in /etc/fstab is mounted as /dev/mapper/centos-var. I'm booted into single user mode and am not sure how to get single user mode to recognize the existing partitions "xfs_repair /dev/mapper...

Re: how to find out my nameservers?

What is in your /etc/resolv.conf?

Do a "cat /etc/resolv.conf" and show the results.

file description d?????????? ? ? ? ?

I have a CentOS workstation failing on yum update with the error message being "OSError: [Errno 5} input/output error" - it's failing on finding a file/folder for the krb5-libs package. When you go into the folder where that file is supposed to be (/var/lib/yum/yumdb/k/) the file description looks c...

Re: Getting an old Matrox video card to work in CentOS 7

Yeah, I understood that my xorg was too new for what they wanted - that was a given. Thanks for the feedback. Dozens of these cards were found on a shelf in storage - it would have saved a lot of money from not having to buy new cards if they could be made to work, but if they're really obsolete, it...

Re: Unable to boot CentOS 7.x since kernel 3.10.0-1160.36.2.el7.x86_64

Can you do a CTRL-ALT-F2 and get a command prompt? On some systems I manage, I get the same symptoms when doing a kernel update. When your symptoms occur, I rerun the video driver install from the command prompt, and reboot, then it successfully comes back up again in X windows. (this is using an NV...
