BTW: I checked my logwatch that came through once the servers were all working again. The update I was suspicious about was in fact "mkinitrd-5.1.19.6-81.el5_10.x86_64" Strangely - this update was only visible through the gui "software updates" but not through yum... as run by webmin... I'm leaving ...

For some strange reason - that I still don't understand - my eth0 profile had been renamed to etho.backup and a new one created with DHCP - so my server was not at its usual fixed ip - but at some other IP. ifconfig found it straight away. Thanks.

Oh and I should have added that all the server processes appear to be running... dovecote, webmin, freenx... and iptables is stopped...

This is a repository of hardware drivers for enterprise linux - and is very well supported with new drivers.
All my problems went away when i found elrepo.
The elrepo community and the centos community seem to overlap.
