Re: CentOS Alternative ‘AlmaLinux’ Beta Released for Testing

Hi all, I have been watching AlmaLinux since the start of the Centos 8 changes. I just installed the current AlmaLinux beta ISO on a very ordinary Dell Optiplex 3050. It felt very much like a Centos 8 install, and proceeded as expected. Currently using kernel 4.18.0.240 . Default background is very ...

Centos 8 possible replacement info

RockyLinux and the community version of CloudLinux OS have been the lead contenders for a Centos 8 replacement.

We now have some more info, and a site for the latter, which has been dubbed AlmaLinux:

Re: CentOS 8 will die and be replaced by Stream

I have been using Centos for client servers, at least since version 5, and probably before. It has always represented stability and functionality that I can fully rely upon. I had assumed that the "hidden" ROI of supporting Centos, for RH, was that many companies and Sysadmins would run RHEL on thei...

Re: Scrapping NetworkManager for config files

Thanks for your comments! I was able to create a bridge without disconnecting myself from the remote server. However, I had to use nmcli commands to do it. Using nmtui to create the bridge and slave device just doesn't work correctly. For the overwhelming majority of servers, once a NIC is set, it s...

Scrapping NetworkManager for config files

Hello All! I am again underwhelmed by NetworkManager and want to use the ifcfg* files exclusively to set the NICs and bridge and not have to worry about anything screwing with it. E.g., I created a bridge with a lot of frustration using nmtui with eno1 slaved to it. NM decided it would be fun to add...

What's your favorite network card?

Hello All! What is your favorite, or most trusted, network card? I generally don't have to buy additional NICs, since so many servers have 2 or 4 built-in. I recently purchased a few Intel 82574L cards because a lot of people recommend them. However, I've had 2 intermittent and unexpected hangs of t...

Re: CentOS 7 Support

I was going to suggest that the OP post on his local Craigslist to find experienced Linux admins, but I realized that this is very generalized. Is there a "recognized" site, like "Monster for Linux specialists" where businesses can turn to find professionals who provide Centos support? I have been p...

Re: PCI compliance when update not available

FYI, I finally solved this by implementing port knocking. It's been around a long time, and it works fairly well, but it requires packages that are not present in the main or EPEL repos: https://li.nux.ro/repos.html Here are my personal notes for implementation - I hope they save someone else some t...

Re: PCI compliance when update not available

Thanks for the reply, Trevor. I agree that the bug is not significant enough to raise alarm. However, the PCI compliance contractor working for our payment processor might not agree, and I don't know how long an answer will take, or if I'll receive a rational one - it's basically a policy matter on ...
