Upgrading legacy RHEL3 packages

Post by alpha01 » 2010/11/05 00:18:37

Hello,

Does anyone know if the CentOS team is still backporting security patches to packages from RHEL3? I believe RedHat has officially killed support for RHEL3 this past month.

I have a White Box Enterprise Linux release 3.0 (Liberation Respin 2) server that hasn't been updated in more than 5 years. (Blame old sysadmins)

Since this server has a legacy in house application that practically makes it impossible to migrate to a new server without breaking things, I was thinking of just upgrading the core applications that are publicly accessible. Which are Apache, PHP, and PostgreSQL. Does anyone foresee any problems if I incrementally upgrade the core packages (and dependent packages) with CentOS' updates?

RH offer extended update support for RHEL3 until October 31st 2013 if you pay them enough.

Short answer: No, they are not.

Slightly longer answer: CentOS 3 reached it EOL on Oct 31, 2010 and has now been laid to rest. Please see this CentOS wiki page.

Welcome to the CentOS fora. Reading FAQ & Readme First is recommended for new users.

CentOS has no plans for extended support [Edit: I see Alan already told you that while I was composing.]. You can at least get the updates that have been issued in the last 5 years. If I were responsible for this system I'd put it in a VM for additional security and easy snapshot/restore if hacked.

This is in the wrong forum. Moving it to CentOS 3 General.

Thanks for your responce everyone.

Like pschaff suggested, I went ahead and updated the system to where at least it has all the major updates issues to the release these past five years.

Now that this server will not be supported/updated, I guess its just a matter of time for our organization to kill this server like we did with our 10 + year old Solaris boxes :-)
