I think it is kind of surprising that 42 per cent of people are above 40---way above that 26 per cent of people in their thirties, which I was expecting to be the modal value

Why? The ranges are effectively 12, 10 and 25 years (taking 18-65 as working life). The ranges tell me more about the questioner than the replies do about usage!

I don't know if I voted, looks like posted some time ago, but - 40+ and have been using CentOS since CentOS 5 and before that used Fedora until I got tired of it going EOL as soon as it was stable and before that used Red Hat.

My first distro was MKLinux DR3 (port of Red Hat 5.1 to Mach Mikrokernel running on PPC hardware - Beige G3 in my case)

I wanted to learn to program. Someone gave me a brand new boxed C++ compiler (I forget vendor, I think Symantic ???) for MacOS but it wouldn't work in MacOS 8, so I went to a ComputerWare in Berkeley to buy OS 7.6.1 where they told me it wouldn't run on a G3.

Looking for a solution, I found out about this thing called Linux. I looked to see if I could use it on a Mac and MKLinux ran on Macs, but DR2 did not run on G3 - so I pre-ordered DR3 which included G3 support. Rest is history.

Glad there's still room on this earth for old people. I am new to Linux in General and CentOS is my latest addition. But I started out with the Sinclair ZX81 and later the Commodore 64. Basic, Pascal, C, C++ and Java.

For many years (too many) I’ve pursued my musical talent professionally; it was supposed to be a win-win situation - do what I enjoy and good at, while earning a living. It turned out to be a lose-lose: making a meager income, while increasingly becoming dissatisfied with music.

So now, in my _advanced_ age of 50, I’m dropping the music bit and looking dive back into computers. It’s a serious undertaking, but I’m enjoying it. More than anything, I’m enjoying having amazing people like you guys, who selflessly help people like myself all the time. That’s pretty amazing in my view.

I’m hoping to be able - perhaps a year down the road - to take a job as an entry level Linux SysAdmin. That would be just awesome, and hopefully, I’m being realistic.

Be aware that there is a LOT of age prejudice in the computer industry. If you're over 40 you are too old, and if you haven't got a relevant degree you won't get past HR (who know nothing about computers but a great deal about paperwork).

Yes, I am well aware of this prejudice. Going through HR would be like running into a brick wall. In my case, finding a job would have to be done in some other way. It's often through the people whom we know, that things happen. I know that there are many like me out there, in a similar situation.
