Kernel upgrade

Post by MoonWolf » 2014/11/08 19:49:07

How do you address kernel upgrades? Sure - it doesn't happen often. But it does happen. I wonder how to deal with it? You should restart server after such upgrade. But what if you have several machines, VMs, etc.? How do you even know WHEN such upgrade happens? Personally i have yum-crond enabled and without close investigation can't tell that kernel got upgraded.

But even when you know that you should do restarts - how to deal with them? What to do when you have several dozens (or hundreds) servers? I have about ten VM's on two hosts (plus 3 other physical servers with no VMs and one VM with CentOS from our ISP) - and it gave me a headache after 6.5 -> 6.6 upgrade. I can imagine the pain in case i have 100 VMs and several 'real' servers.

I'm trying to implement katello/foreman (with no success yet) and i hope it'll help. Now i don't feel comfortable doing it by hand... How do you do it?
