CentOS Social, five star hang out...

Post by travis_farmer » 2017/03/25 11:30:43

i must say, for a five star hangout, it is pretty quiet in here. ;)

Personally, i am somewhat new to CentOS (but not to Linux). I remember the old days (not really that long ago), before YUM. well, rather before i knew about YUM anyway. I started with Mandrake Linux (Kernel 2.12 i think), and i remember compiling from source, or using RPM directly, and having to spend hours researching dependencies.

Now that i am running CentOS, i am extremely happy with the stability (with the exceptions from me changing stuff), and ease of use. especially where SSH is allowed from a fresh install. i remember having to work on my hobby server directly for a while before i could connect remotely to finish configuration. I am very happy that i can just complete an install, then grab my laptop, sit in my favorite chair, and work comfortably. :D it would be nice if Webmin was installed and ready, but it is quite easy to create the YUM repo, and install it from that.

Linux seems to have come a long way since the late 90s, to early 2K.

Wouldn't it be wild if someone developed a cyber-attack that nuked Windows 10 and replaced it with Linux?

yeah, that would be rather wild. though i do have a laptop running win 8.1, just for the programs that i can't find Linux replacements for.

Ah, we had hopes for this section, but it never took off. However, if enough people start posting in it, hopefully, its activity will increase.

well, how about a bit of a topic starter: What do people here do for hobbies (may include or disclude Linux)?

My biggest hobby is electronics, and more recently, i have purchased a 48" X 48" X 5" (working area) CNC router table that i plan on fixing up, and using.

when complete, i will use LinuxCNC to operate it. it is a little rough around the edges, but i am pleased with it, and look forward to making it go.

That can't be a router, it has no RJ45 ports...
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.
