CentOS at Enterprise Company

Post by hzq739 » 2018/04/19 08:44:39

Hi all

We are about to create a business case for migrate RHEL to CentOS for all or
a subset of our RHEL holdings. I have two questions that I hope to get help answering.
1. I want to get in touch with a company that have done this journey on an Enterprise company.
2. Suggestion/recommendation of vendors that can provide support for CentOs.

Scop:
North Europe
Number of RHEL +8.000
Support 24x7 (small part of the total amount of servers)

Thanks

There is no support for CentOS. If you need support then you want RHEL.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

What about a company as RogueWave Software. They seems to have a pretty solid support in place?

About the only difference between RHEL and CentOS is the support, or lack of it. Oh, and the bill.

Sure, it's possible to use CentOS in a production environment but if you require the hand holding and general safety belt of having a support contract in place then it's not the right thing to use. That's what RHEL is for.

Maybe so, but if you have +8.000 servers and a handful need support (business critical systems)
does is make sense to have all servers on the same OS and sign up support for these that have need?
I don't want to administrate 2 different platforms if I can avoid.

We have roughly 7,000 Linux images in our enterprise, most are RHEL, but we have begun deploying CentOS in certain areas, mainly our Hadoop data nodes. Managing both CentOS and RHEL has not been much of a chore, it has been relatively easy to keep the versions in sync with one another when we build our patch bundles. It has been a bigger chore to manage all the various hardware platforms that we deploy on (HP, Cisco, IBM and soon Dell). With all the specific drivers and firmware images to deploy, the OS management is simple.

If you have any specific questions, please reach out and I'll answer as best as I can.
