Can't post in the CentOS 4 forums

Post by volumetricsteve » 2014/12/11 14:08:51

I'd like to post this in the right section, but I get an error saying I don't have permission to post in that forum. I think I'm running into a simple enough issue, I can't get CentOS 4 to install on VirtualBox 4.3.20 (latest I believe) because it says it can't find a drive to install on. CentOS 2 had the same issue. I found if I switch the virtual controller from sata to ide, it works. Is there a special process to get it to work in sata mode? am I likely to run into this issue on a physical machine with a real sata adapter? Thank you.

The fact that you can't post in the CentOS 4 forums is by design: it's been end of life for nearly 3 years so is unsupported.

CentOS 4 predates SATA drives by several years and I suspect it will not work. If you are to stand a chance of making it work then you need to be using the most recent ISO images which, I believe without looking, are 4.8 ones. I don't believe there were ever iso images released for 4.9.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

No memory problems there. You are absolutely correct! :)

Not so much memory problems, more the only time I used el4 was when I first started a job and my first task was to migrate it all to el5 so I'm not sure I ever installed it at all.

Cool! that makes sense, I'm quickly finding that Cent OS is my favorite distro, it's just a little on the heavy side if I want a GUI, so I was going back to the archives to find smaller installs.

Potentially dumb question: Do you think 4.8 or really 5 would work passably on a 1ghz pentium 3?

CentOS 5 is really your only choice. 4 is unsupported and has numerous unfixed security vulnerabilties and should be avoided. I believe 5 should run on that sort of machine and be ok. It has about another 2 years of security updates left.

I think, it depends on your ram. 256 m the absolutely minimum, 512 is enough for some task.
