Looking for the documentation for installing 389 server

Post by ro55mo » 2015/10/04 11:13:33

Hello

I am not a complete Linux noob but a very long way from a veteran and am looking to improve my skills. For example I have setup a bind9 forwarding and caching server on my raspberrypi and have my main box acting as a vsftp server.

Now I have happily created a VM in virtual box of CentOS 7 with the minimal install, assigned a static IP and initial updates.

I now want to practice installing 389 server. So I going looking for the official documentation. It appears to end with version 5.

https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/DirectoryServerSetup

Their are various tutorials on the web but most refer to 6.5 and a lot of them seem to supply different advice .

Am I looking in the wrong place? I just want to get my information from "the horses mouth" so to speak.

Any advice gratefully received.

I will suggest that you use the upstream, Red Hat, documentation which is available here.

Sadly the Redhat documentation seems unsuitable. Third step of section 1.2.4 left me unable to login to the server.

This article notes that "Presently all components of 389-ds are not available in yum repo of CentOS7" so you have to work around it. I attempted this but ended up with loads of dependency errors.

I will have a go with CentOS 6.7 this evening. I have also purchased a relevant ebook on CentOS server administration.

Way back in 6.4 the 389 directory server was in the EPEL repos.

It looks like on 7 we were waiting until 7.1 for the console and admin server. I believe 7.1 was available in April, so you might check that out.
