Suggestions For Upgrading My CentOS Server Hardware

Postby simon_lefisch » 2017/10/06 00:27:06

Hi everyone,

I am currently using hardware from 2008 for my CentOS server, however I am looking to upgrade my all my hardware. The following is my current hardware:

MOBO: Asus P5Q Pro
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 @2.83GHz
RAM: 8GB - 2x2GB Kingston Hyper-X DDR2-1066 & 2x2GB Crucial DDR2-1066
HDD: 1TB WD (OS), 2x4TB Toshiba in RAID1

I'll eventually upgrade the HDDs to server/NAS grade HDDs, but my main concern is the Mobo/CPU. I was looking at this dual CPU Supermicro MOBO with this 10-core CPU which I would eventually install a second CPU of the same model. However the MOBO can only handle 18 cores and if I use 2 of the 10-core CPUs, I'll be short 2 cores. I'd prefer to get a board that handles all 20 (or more). Does anyone have any suggestions for a good dual CPU MOBO that can handle 20 cores? Not looking to spend an extreme amount of money (maybe $400-ish tops). thanks for any suggestions

Where are you seeing the information that that motherboard only handles a certain number of cores?

It actually says that on the newegg site and did say that on the manufacturer site but apparently its been changed on the manufacturer site and now says 22 cores. Weird.

Apparently you need BIOS v2.0 or above to handle E5-xxxx v4 CPUs.
