How can I learn CentOS?

Post by alexandervj » 2014/01/07 23:27:52

I'm totally new to Linux, dont know much about using the command line, but I really want to learn CentOS. I dont have a lot of money to spend on classes, I might be able to spend $100 on a book or something but thats about it.

Whats the best way to learn without buying a class? Does anyone know of any websites that teach CentOS? I've watched a couple of videos on YouTube but I want something more substantial than just a few videos. Thanks for your help

I find the best way is to find an expert in RHEL/CENTOS and then do a Vulcan Mind Meld with them.

If that's not possible, get the RHCE study books and diligently do EVERY study guide and practice lab (sometimes many many many times more then once). If you buy used books, you shouldn't have to spend more then $60 USD.

Video's are for the ADHD "me me me" generation (in other words, pretty useless). Learning is a hands on process, not a passive watching process.

Thanks for the advice, I'll check out the RHCE study books. I agree you need a hands-on approach to learning but videos like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3QAUL38INU are great for a walk through, cant get that from a book. I've actually learned a lot from videos, they're a great place to get started. I think those RHCE study books are gonna be a great way to expand though

I've found quite a lot online is more 'how to acheive xxxx' and rather than explaining what every command is doing the authors seem to expect people to just paste the commands in.

You have to remember most tools will have a great manual, and I've quickly gotten used to using the man command as well. There are a lot of conventions and little tricks you can use that won't be found this way though - and I've learnt a few things from just watching colleagues working or watching things on youtube etc.

The problem is there is so much you can do, that there isn't going to be a single place to 'learn centos'.

There is a tutorial that may be good starting place. Tailored more for a general linux audience than CentOS specific but it's still useful

The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

I have started working through a book titled Red Hat Certified System Administrator and Engineer by Asghar Ghori. It is based on RHEL 6, which is why I installed CentOS. So far it seems very good -- comprehensive and easy to follow. It was quite expensive, though.

The definitive guide to all things on Enterprise Linux systems can be found by reading http://docs.redhat.com

Much better than following random unvetted youtube links.
