CentOS 6.5 hangs with memory pressure test by memtester 4.3.0

Post by liuruochen » 2017/05/22 08:58:09

I'm trying to carry out memory pressure test by using memtester 4.3.0. on CentOS 6.5 ,but the OS hangs few seconds later when I execute the memtest script. I have to reboot the system to solve this problem.
I have tried the pressure test on RHEL 7.0. in the same server environment. It has no problem.
So,I want to know why the CentOS 6.5 can't use the memtester to do pressure test, but RHEL7.0 can.
I'm looking forward to your reply.

Both of your tests are invalid. Neither 6.5 nor 7.0 are supported and both contain known high severity security (and other) bugs that could be exploited. Neither should be used. Try again on 6.9 and 7.3 - those are the only supported versions.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

From memtester's man page:
Note that it is up to you to know how much memory you can safely allocate for testing. If you attempt to allocate more memory than is available, memtester should figure that out, reduce the amount slightly, and try again. However, this can lead to memtester successfully allocating and mlocking essentially all free memory on the system ...

So choose wisely.
Anyway, memtester is not a tool for simulating memory pressure, it's a tool for detecting faulty memory.

It's probably not hanging, but probably swapping in/out of disk.....
I don't understand what your end game is (i.e.: why you feel the need to do this)....
