System reboot after user log out of gui

Post by pschaff » 2011/08/06 14:08:16

Welcome to the CentOS fora. Please see the recommended reading for new users linked in my signature.

That's one I don't remember seeing before. Have you installed all available updates? Anything interesting in /var/log/messages at the time of the reboot? Please do not post the entire log file.

If more help is needed then please provide more information about your system by running "./getinfo.sh" and showing us the output file.

Thanks for your responds Phil,

I have done a yum update and No Packages marked for Update.

I have attached the system information from the getinfo.sh (get_sys_info).

I also check the /var/log/messages that there is a entry with an error [1312813960.193244] [nm-manager.c:1312] user_proxy_init(): could not init user settings proxy: (3) Could not get owner of name. I am not sure if this is the problem. If you check message file I did a log out off the root user at 16:30.

Hope this gives you a more clear understanding of this log out restart.

The forum attachment function is permanently broken. Please just paste the output file into the edit window. It already has
...
tags for proper formatting.

Long output can go to http://pastebin.centos.org if required.

Looking at the list, a few things should be corrected:

1) You have both the network and the NetworkManager service enabled. While I would not expect this to cause reboots at logoff, this may cause issues, especially networking-related. Use the chkconfig command to switch off the service you do not want to use, most likely network:
# chkconfig network off
2) You have rpmforge enabled without having installed or configured yum-plugin-priorities. This may cause core packages to be replaced by rpmforge packages, with unpredictable results. Please install and configure yum-plugin-priorities or disable rpmforge.

You then may want to check what was installed from non-CentOS sources:
# rpm -qa --qf '%{NAME} %{VENDOR}\n' | grep -v CentOS
Alternatively, you can use
# yum list installed
as RHEL6/CentOS6 now lists the originating repo, instead of just 'installed'.

Thank you for the prompt response.

1) I have turned off network.
# chkconfig --list network
network 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off

2) I have removed all yum plugins pointing to rpm-forge

# ls /etc/yum.repos.d/ -l
total 16
1926 Jul 3 04:16 CentOS-Base.repo
root root 637 Jul 3 04:16 CentOS-Debuginfo.repo
root root 626 Jul 3 04:16 CentOS-Media.repo
root root 241 May 19 2010 virtualbox.repo

3) I see rpmforge-release.x86_64 0.5.2-2.el6.rf @/rpmforge-release-0.5.2-2.el6.rf.x86_64 is installed. Is it better to remove it?

Thank you for the prompt response.

1) I have turned off network.
# chkconfig --list network
network 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off
That was highly advisable for CentOS-5 and earlier. RHEL/CentOS-6 defaults to having both "network" and "NetworkManager" services running and I have not seen problems with that configuration. I doubt it is relevant to the reboot anyway.

2) I have removed all yum plugins pointing to rpm-forge
For the sake of accuracy, what you removed were the repository configuration files for RPMforge and not plugins. Deleting files belonging to an RPM package is generally not advisable, nor should it be necessary. You can leave the files in place and just disable the repo by inserting "enabled=0" in each stanza of the repo configurations.

3) I see rpmforge-release.x86_64 0.5.2-2.el6.rf @/rpmforge-release-0.5.2-2.el6.rf.x86_64 is installed. Is it better to remove it?
As you have already removed the files then removing the package is probably advisable. It will need to be reinstalled if you want to install or update RPMforge packages. I rather doubt any of that is relevant to the reboot problem either.

The system still reboot after I log off from a Gnome session.

Not sure what that's all about. You previously posted /var/log/messages lines from right after the reboot. What would be more interesting is what happens right before the reboot. It is not clear how the above fit into that time sequence. Are you logging in as a normal user and not root?

To me this looks like the reboot occurs at 16:30:51, with the first message after the reboot at 16:32:23

If that is correct, the system just coldboots without warning, no shutdown and thus no logging; not a proper 'reboot'.

I didn't know about C6 having network and NetworkManager enabled as a proper config, especially as with C5 it has been stated that network would be deprecated.

Nothing in the OP's info so far suggests a reason for reboots; I was just sort of hoping the info requested would reveal replacement of a core package that might somehow attribute to the problem, but it looks like nothing was ever installed yet from rpmforge, except the repo itself.

I guess the elimination process should involve a number of steps, like finding out the following
- How do you log out (I'd assume by 'logout' you don't mean pressing Alt-Ctl-Del)?
- Does the box only reboot after a graphical logout, or also after a console logout?
- Is it always the same user experiencing the reboot-at-logout, or does this happen with all users?
- Have any logout scripts been configured, either in .bash_logout or in /etc/gdm/PostSession?
- When rebooting, does the system show any indication of unclean filesystem status, supporting the cold-boot assumption (remove 'rhgb quiet' from the kernel line in grub.conf to see the boot messages)?
- is there any indication of hardware initialization issues in /var/log/dmesg?

There's probably more, but this is what pops up with me as next steps.
It might be worth running memtest68+ as well, although with memory issues I would not expect problems at logout only.

Thank you guys for looking into my problem.

I have removed the rpmforge-release.x86_64 package.
# rpm -q rpmforge-release.x86_64
package rpmforge-release.x86_64 is not installed

1) I log out by clicking System --> Log Out 'username' --> Log Out again.
2) The reboot occurs only after a graphical log out. I can ssh in and exit without any issues.
3) The reboot happens with all users root and created users.
4) No log out scripts were configured.
5) There is no clean reboot after a graphical log out it is as you refer too a cold-boot. There is no text indication of unmounting file system or stop any services when the reboot occurs.
6) The only strange thing I could see in /var/log/dmesg is:

iTCO_wdt: Intel TCO WatchDog Timer Driver v1.05
iTCO_wdt: failed to reset NO_REBOOT flag, reboot disabled by hardware
iTCO_wdt: No card detected
