Are you sure the BIOS is set to boot from the USB drive? Have you read http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/InstallFromUSBkey ?

Three possibilities I can think of:

1. BIOS settings or lack of capability to boot from USB media.
2. Bad USB media or controller.
3. Pilot error - failure to correctly follow the procedure.
3a. Partition not bootable.
3b. Did not correctly write the boot loader.
3c. Defective syslinux version.

I believe you could use Fedora LiveUSB Creator for this sort of task (there's a Windows version). You just need to download the CentOS's LiveCD iso image.

Welcome to the CentOS fora nibgun. Please see the recommended reading for new users linked in my signature.

Your suggestion may work, and might be a good test of an independent method for creating bootable media, but rather misses the point of how to create bootable installation media. On the other hand, the LiveCD/LiveDVD images can be installed to disk, so that may be useful; although the flexibility available with true installation media will not be available.

Thanks for posting.

Thanks for your comment, but there has been no previous mention of Windows as the platform for USB creation in the thread.

I have had great success with "livecd-iso-to-disk". Livecd-iso-to-disk is provided by the package "livecd-tools" and can take a install DVD and create a boot-able usb install media.

Hope this helps,
