Screen resolution stuck at 1280 x 768 after updating CentOS

I am running CentOS 6.3 under VMware Workstation and everything has been working fine until today. Today I installed some CentOS updates and also upgraded my version of VMware Workstation to 8.0.4 and now for some reason the maximum resolution that I get set for CentOS is 1280 x 768 whereas the graphics card supports much higher resolutions and prior to the update(s) the resolution of CentOS would automatically adjust as I resized the VMware window. Now it's stuck at 1280 x 768 and I cannot see the task bar at the bottom of the screen.

So basically I am not sure if this is a CentOS problem or a WMware problem or both but is there something I can configure in CentOS to allow higher resolutions? When I go into System->Preferences->Display I used to be able to see resoltions much higher but the highest listed now is 1280 x 768. No hardware changes have been made so I am hoping there is a configuration file for the display somehwere where I can add in some higher resolutions and then be able to select them.

Yes, I realise this may well be an issue with VMware but I'd like to try to see what can be done at the CentOS level to resolve the problem so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

You've probably updated the CentOS system and installed a new kernel and accidentally uninstalled the VMWare guest tools. You'll need to reinstall them to get their special video drivers back which handle all this sort of thing.
