Xorg won't start with kernel-2.6.32-431.20.5.el6.x86_64

Post by nitro3v » 2014/07/26 10:36:53

Hi Guys, first of all, thanks for helping me.
I use CentOS6 on a SONY VAIO VPCSB1A9E with graphic card AMD Radeon HD 6630M with AMD Proprietary Linux Driver (Dec.6.2013)
All works as expected with no issue and good performance; yesterday night I decide to update my kernel kernel-2.6.32-431.20.3.el6.x86_64 to kernel-2.6.32-431.20.5.el6.x86_64 and after this upgrade Xorg\Gnome is not able to start.
Starting centos with "old" kernel everything works fine.

Below the updated packages:

If you install the ATI driver from the manufacturer web site then this is expected since it builds itself on your machine and is customised to that particular kernel in use at the time. You'll need to reinstall it every time there is a kernel update. A better method is to google ELRepo and grab their packaged version of the same driver which is designed to survive kernel updates. Same driver, different packaging, works better.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

OK, yes because during the driver installation it make a dracut of the kernel. Right?
Thanks for the advice about ELRepo.
You can make this question solved.

It's more than dracut, it actually builds the module against the running kernel and it's specific to that one and that one only.

Can't seem to find 'fglrx' in ElRepo. What could be the reason for this?
I have a Apple Mac mini with a HD6630M in it.
