[SOLVED] Install CentOS 6.6 using USB

Post by 1Raptor007 » 2015/02/23 19:28:34

I have a relatively old system (32-bit) that does not have a DVD player and I am trying to install CentOS 6.6 using a USB flash drive. Listed below is what I have tried. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.
1. Downloaded "CentOS-6.6-i386-bin-DVD1.iso"
2. Used Win32 Disk Imager on a Windows 7 machine to extract ISO to USB flash drive (16gb)
3. Confirmed target system had boot priority set to USB flash drive
4. Upon starting and immediately right after POST the message "'isolinux.bin missing or corrupt" comes up
5. Where do I go from here? I cannot view the files on the USB flash drive from my Windows 7 machine. Apparently it is formatted differently.

Is there another tool to use other than Win32 Disk Imager? What am I missing?

Perplexed. =)

I followed the directions http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/InstallFromUSBkey but I still get "isolinux.bin missing or corrupt". Why is Linux so difficult to install. No wonder why I have stayed away from this product for so long?

Did you check the md5sum of the ISO before copying it to the USB drive?
Is the drive big enough to hold the whole ISO?
You must raw write the file to the drive, not a partition.

I am using a Windows 7 machine to write ISO to USB. I have tried three different programs to do that. The same result occurs >>> isolinux.bin missing or corrupt.
The USB drive I am using is 16gb. The ISO is 3.9 gb
The ISO to USB programs don't give any options to write to a partition. They format the drive each time.
I checked the MD5 checksum using WinMD5Free v1.20 and it verified a match to the original MD5 checksum posted by CentOS.

Thank you for your help.

If it is formatting the drive, it is not raw writing the ISO to the drive.

The instructions you quote say to use either dd or rawrite2. Did you try those?
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

The issue was using a bad program to extract ISO to USB bootable drive. I finally found one that works. I have been successful in getting different ISOs to USB so I know it does a good job. Win32 Disk Imager was a joke and DOES NOT WORK. The one that works is RUFUS >>> https://rufus.akeo.ie/ Now that I have bootable USB I am having trouble installing CentOS 6.6. See my next post on this. All I get is a non GUI install wizard and it keeps wanting to install on my USB flash drive. Not too thrilled with Linux. Just saying

Do not use any program that extracts the ISO. Follow the instructions you were given and make sure your machine meets the minimum requirements in the release notes.

We recommend dd and rawrite2 because they make no changes to the iso, they merely copy it to the USB stick as-is. Those programs that attempt to change the iso as it's being written do not understand the format that CentOS uses and corrupt it.
