Hi,
I have the basics of using yum to upgrade the OS but want to make sure I upgrade to 6.6 and not 7. For rev 7 I would rather do a fresh install. Will yum update take me to 6.6?
Thanks
How to upgrade 6.3 to 6.6 but not Centos 7

Yes, yum update will update your system to 6.6. It will not update to 7.
You are advised to check the release notes of each minor release in between to see if there is anything that you need to take into account:
