Do I have to re-boot?

Post by CharmingNathan » 2015/04/10 08:50:53

Hello everyone,

I am a Linux Newbie, who has managed to get his CentOS 6 Server up and running with the help of this Forum - it runs D.N.S., Mail, Web, and a piece of software for collecting listener statistics.

I have been working on it for most of the last few days, via TightV.N.C. and last night, I could no longer F.T.P., receiving the error message that "warning: can't get client address: Connection reset by peer". Shortly afterwards I was unable to login via TightV.N.C., and this morning I attached a monitor to the server and saw the same affect: with any keyboard and/or mouse input, the Desktop backgound flashes on and off a few times, then returns to black.

From what I can ascertain the Web and Mail Server side appear to be down...although I have received E-Mail's, presumably generated by the server:

Does that provide any useful information? Is there a way past this, without having to re-boot? In Widows for example, one can normally press the CTRL+ALT+DEL buttons down, get the Task Manager, and kill off any processes that have hung, resolving the situation, but have tried that already, and the screen just flashes at me!!!

I'd be grateful for any helpful suggestions please!

Thank you.

Considered you have physical access to the server, would you please explain why you are reluctant to reboot?

Yes, two reasons:

Firstly it has been up and running since the beginning of February, and secondly - and more importantly - it still has listeners attached and listening to the output.

Well, you'll understand that greatly complicates the solution approach. You also realize that the server will eventually need to be rebooted, of course. As for those listeners, are they simply web server/FTP listeners? If so, I'd say maintaining them is not of paramount importance and they can be severed, but the last word is up to you, of course.
In order to asses what could have caused the malfunction, would you please post the contents of /var/log/yum.log?

Code: Select all

cat /var/log/yum.log
A complete list of all the running processes may be helpful, too

Code: Select all

ps -ef
Both commands to be run as root. Also, please note that there are limits to the quantity of lines one can attach to a single forum post, so you may want to use CentOS pastebin instead and post here the links.

I know it doesn't make life any easier - as they are listening to an audio stream courtesy of Edcast and going through Centova Cast - which is still presumably working on the server - I presume they are listening via HTTP rather than FTP.

As for running, cat /var/log/yum.log and ps -ef, perhaps there has been some mis-understanding? As I stated in my first post, whether I attempt to access via TightVNC or attaching a monitor for direct access, I have no method of communicating with the server - any touch of a key or movement of mouse just produces the blue desktop background, then it alternates between that and a black screen. Also, does the crash E-Mail content which I posted above not help?

Unless, of course, you meant for me to run those commands post re-boot, which would seem to imply you don't feel there is an alternative to re-booting?

If it doesn't respond to the console then I doubt if it's doing anything at all for anyone.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

There is an external Homepage which I can still reach, which tells me that one stream has listeners, plus the indicator lights on my Modem/Router are flashing on and off, very rapidly, which is usually a sign that there are listeners to the stream. Centova Cast (which manages the output of the stream, effectively), is a very small piece of software, so I am not surprised it is still running, but by the looks of it, it's all that actually is!

Is there no CTRL+ALT+DEL equivalent on CentOS 6 that would allow me to kill the hung processes? Although instinct tells me that would probably re-boot the server anyway!

In direct response to your post though TrevorH, I haven't found a way of communicating with the server: TightVNC still responds in that when I try to access the server, it still asks for my login credentials, but then goes back to the flashing screens showing the blue desktop and a black screen intermittently.

Yes, sorry: I thought the monitor/keyboard approach had worked. Now, re-reading your post I realize I misunderstood... my bad. And yes, Ctrl-Alt-Del will reboot the server, if anything. As a last resort, I would try to access the console by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F2/3/4 with the monitor/keyboard attached. If that still doesn't work, then you're definitely out of luck, IMO.

Thanks for your clarification giulix63! One question though regarding pressing CTRL+ALT+F2/3/4, I actually tried that on my own P.C. (which also happens to run CentOS 6) and just ended up losing the desktop and being at the console. If I do that with the server, and the same thing happens, i.e. the desktop crashes even more that it seems it already has and the output the listeners are connected to will therefore be presumably lost, is that not tantamount to re-booting anyway, in that the affect will be the same?

I suppose your suggestion is that once at the console, I could at least run those commands to see what the problem is, and attempt to resolve it, i.e. re-start Apache, vsftpd, etc.?

If you press Ctrl-Alt-F1 on your own PC, you'll get your desktop session back. So no, ideally you should still be able to get your initial session back, whatever that was (not that it makes any difference here, since you can't use it).

That's the idea. Basically, what we are trying here is to regain control of the server without rebooting.

P.S. I just realized you didn't mention SSH. Is sshd running on the server? If so, you may also try to ssh into it: Open a teminal and

Code: Select all

ssh user@server_name_or_ip_address
