Wordpress updates

Post by upnort » 2015/05/06 20:49:04

How fast do WordPress security patches roll downhill into CentOS repos? Thanks. :)

They don't. CentOS does not ship wordpress.
If you got it from epel, you could ask them.
If you got it from repoforge, probably never.

OK, thanks. I obtained access to a CentOS 6.6 system. I found that WordPress is from EPEL and is not the current version.

Makes sense I suppose why many how-to authors install WordPress directly from the WP folks. I think the WP software automatically checks for updates, so would seem then the preferred way to keep updated is directly from the WP folks.

The EPEL epel-testing repo has 4.2.1-1.el7 currently.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

4.2.2 is already in the queue...

EPEL-7 https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates ... .2.2-1.el7
EPEL-6 https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates ... .2.2-1.el6
EPEL-5 https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates ... .2.2-1.el5

Testing these packages and giving karma will allow to have them faster in stable repository (else, have to wait for ~2 weeks)

Okay. Yesterday when I checked a CentOS 6.6 system, yum reported version 4.1.1 was available.

While I understand the testing period requirements, two weeks is a long time for WP security lapses and that answers my original question. Browsing the web indicates most how-to authors install WP directly from the WP folks. Then let the WP software auto-update to fetch security patches.

I never liked installing software outside the package system, but seems the WP software installs entirely in one directory, so removal is straightforward. Possibly one way to remain with the package system is to add epel-testing to the repolist. WordPress is in the news almost weekly for security patches. While the WP folks seem to respond within 24 hours, waiting for distro repos to bubble down seems to be a long time, relatively speaking.

I am not using WP. Just researching. I am helping a person who is thinking of using WP on a CentOS system.
