Need help installing KDE.

Post by Dossis » 2015/05/22 13:54:46

So.. I rented VPS and it came with CentOS 6.6 minimal setup. So everything I can do is to use Putty or VNC to connect it and I see an command line. I've been trying to install KDE in it (LXDE would be better, but I don't know how it install it for CentOS)

So the problem is that when I type "yum install kde-workspace" I will get this error:
No package kde-workspace available.
Error: Nothing to do
So if someone could point me out how to do this step by step (Step by step tutorial for removing all KDE related things and installing LXDE for CentOS would be superb)

I'm pretty noob with Linux, but that's the reason I rented that VPS so I can learn to use it better. :D

Thank you,
Dossis.

kde-workspace is not a valid package in CentOS 6. Run yum list kde\* to get a list of all the available kde packages.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Ok, got it. But now I need to know how I get CentOS 6 to boot in it at start. Currently it always opens up in command line.

Check that your initdefault line in /etc/inittab shows 5 and not 3.
