X is unable to start during install of 64bit distribution
I picked up a 32 bit Dell server cheap, and installed Centos 6.6, so when I found a slightly newer/better 64-bit HP server, I wanted Centos for it too. The HP is a DL380 G4 with dual 3.6gb processors, more ram, raid, faster drives..... same video (Rage XL, I think). The 64-bit Centos 6.6 installer gets to the point where X would start, and it tells me that it can not, and gives me a text install option and something else I can't remember. What would cause X to be unable to load/start?
I guess I should add that, while I haven't used Windows on my home computer for a number of years, that I'm basically a linux newbie. I dig around to find answers, but often get confused by what I read. I used to putts around with DOS and Windows back in the 486 era, but that's been a long time.
Also, I'm basically using these servers as desktop machines, not servers. The 32-bit Centos runs fine on the 64-bit machine......although it did freeze up on me twice, which I thought was odd.
I'd really like to run 64-bit since that's what the computer was built to do.

Re: X is unable to start duirng install of 64bit ditribution
You'll need to run it again and post whatever the error message is. Anything else would just lead to guesswork.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

It just says that X was unable to start. The exact error goes by too fast to tell you word for word. Then I'm left on a screen that gives me text mode or a graphical install from another computer (VNC). This is after I've entered the mirror information and it's downloaded it.
Re: X is unable to start during install of 64bit distributio
You could try the "install system with basic video driver" option from the boot menu.

Unless it was 7, I already tried using the basic video option.

Re: X is unable to start during install of 64bit distributio
Well, I did a few things:
# yum groupinstall "Desktop" "Desktop Platform" "X Window System" "Fonts"
telinit 5
startx
It almost worked. After Startx, I get a bunch of stuff that flies by on the screen, and it stops, mentioning that there is a fatal error, and that I need to check a log file. then the computer start "counting" waiting for the X server to be ready...... it prints two periods over and over again, until I push the power button, as nothing else I do seems to do anything to stop it.
So tomorrow, I guess I see if I can find that log file, and read it.

Re: X is unable to start during install of 64bit distributio
Something does not add up. You said this was the install yet you are running yum groupinstall? If you are already installed then look at the logs - /var/log/Xorg.0.log for a start.

Re: X is unable to start during install of 64bit distributio
I completed the text install, upon failure of X. The text install, I guess doesn't install anything graphical. That log file you mentioned is the same one that I was told by the computer, to check. I also got some kind of failure about something not being able to be written to the raid system, too.

You need to stop being so vague. Post exact error messages or no-one will be able to help you.

I told you that it went by too quickly, to give you an exact message. While making the previous post, I'm away from the machine.TrevorH wrote:You need to stop being so vague. Post exact error messages or no-one will be able to help you.
