Re: Warnig erase old kernel

I just did yum update kernel and it worked and there are no errors. My WHM wants me to do a reboot now, should I?

This is my latest version installed...

kernel-2.6.32-642.11.1.el6.x86_64
kernel-2.6.32-642.13.1.el6.x86_64
kernel-2.6.32-642.15.1.el6.x86_64

However, when I do a uname -r

This one shows up kernel-2.6.32-642.13.1.el6.x86_64

How do I activate or make sure latest version is running? ReBoot?

This is what the adviser says

Current kernel version does not match the kernel version for boot. running kernel: 2.6.32-642.13.1.el6.x86_64, boot kernel: 2.6.32-642.15.1.el6.x86_64
Reboot the system in the "Graceful Server Reboot" area. Check the boot configuration in grub.conf if the new kernel is not loaded after a reboot.

I am just so nervous about rebooting and if I do not, the newest version does not get installed. What should I do from this point?

You have to reboot to change the kernel.
Here is what I would have done:
Go to /boot and check that all files are there and that their sizes are about right.
Follow TrevorH's instructions to check that initramfs is ok.
Check that modules corresponding to the kernel are installed (I'm not on a CentOS system now, but they're most likely in /lib/modules).

Do you have access to the console? i.e the one that shows the BIOS messages etc at boot time? If you do then you do not have anything to worry about as you can simply select an older kernel from the list. If you do not then perhaps someone else - your hoster? - may do and can help you if you need them to. If this is a VM then you should be able to get access to the console remotely. If it's server class hardware then it will probably have an IPMI interface that also lets you get access to the console remotely.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Does your hosting service allow you to take snapshots of the filesystem and restore them? If so, take a snapshot just before you reboot.

I did it last night and I did it by yum update kernel and all seemed to work OK. I did the reboot my server at the control panel of my hosting provider OVH.

No errors, Security Adviser is happy and its all been updated.

Thanks so much for all your help.
