Error 17 After CentOS 6.3 Install on WD Passport External Hard Drive

Post by eas3964 » 2017/04/23 22:13:20

Hello, all...

I'm having a problem with a fresh installation of CentOS 6.3. I tried to install the system to an external hard drive (Western Digital Passport 1TB on a 20GB partition) but keep getting an error on startup. The screen simply says Error 17, nothing more. The CentOS splash screen doesn't even display. So I'm left with Windows only. However, it worked when I installed the system (CentOS 6.8) to a flash drive. Can someone help me rectify this?

My theories:
1. Installing CentOS from a DVD on the hard drive and a LiveUSB on the flash drive

2. Installing the boot loader onto sdb (external hard drive) instead of sde (internal hard drive)

3. Having a /boot, /, and swap partition all within that 20GB space

Any help is greatly appreciated. I have to enter the boot device menu from BIOS to get to the external hard drive since I had a bad experience putting the boot loader onto the internal hard drive (caused a read error on it), but every time that Error 17 screen pops up, forcing me to restart.

Thanks in advance!
Kyle

Why on earth would you install something that's about 5 years out of date? Try again with 6.9 and see if the problem persists.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

I did and it's working fine, but with a few kinks. Those I'll be posting in the Hardware forum.
