Is CentOS 6.8 repository still maintained?

Post by nilesh_in2m » 2017/06/22 14:08:49

We are no longer seeing updates for CentOS 6.8 on following repository. Is CentOS 6.8 repository still maintained?

rsync://mirror.chpc.utah.edu/pub/centos/6.8/

You shouldn't be using URLs with the exact point release hard coded. When a new point release comes out, the symlink from /6/ to e.g. 6.8 is updated to point to the latest - 6.9 in this case. Shortly afterwards, the entire 6.8 directory is moved to vault.centos.org (where old releases go to die) and is removed from all mirrors.

6.9 is current and is the one that should be used.

If you had the URL in your /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo file then that would be the wrong thing to do - it should point to just '6/' so that it follows the symlink and gets the latest. From the post you made it looks like you are maintaining your own local mirror and rsyncing it. That's good but it does need manual intervention every time a new point release comes out. You can find instructions for what to do at the end of the https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/CreateLocalMirror page.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.
