command terminal not responding

Hi All, when i use certain commands, my CLI Gives no output and i am forced to close the window.

for eg: ifconfig gives me no out put or error message, but just a blank scree..

1) sudo tcpdump -ttttnnr filename to open a wireshark capture gives me no response, but window looks freezd. ( it used to work for me earlier)


can some one help me out please?

See if there's anything interesting in /var/log/messages or in the output of dmesg.

Does it work if run at the local console?
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.
Info for USB installs on http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/InstallFromUSBkey
CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Is it always the same commands? Both you commands are network related, so maybe it's a network problem?

not same commands, ifconfig makes it freez, but i reopen and try ifconfig -a, it works.
htop makes it freeze, "free" works

i didnt try at local console, since the machine is is remote location
