Good morning all,
I am thinking of installing CentOS 6.9 (GNOME 2) onto my main, daily, workstation. I was wondering if my hardware will be fully compatible.
Here are my specs:-
* Intel Xeon X5355 Quad Core @ 2.664 GHz
* 12 GB DDR2 ECC (FB) RAM @ 667 MHz
* NVidia GeForce 8800 GTS (640 Mb)
Please could someone let me know of any issues that I may experience, if any.
Many thanks.
Will my hardware work??
Re: Will my hardware work??
I'd say probably yes but I'd also ask why 6.9 and not 7.x?
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Thanks for your reply - I am using 6.9 because I don't like Gnome 3 DETrevorH wrote:I'd say probably yes but I'd also ask why 6.9 and not 7.x?
Re: Will my hardware work??
I run CentOS 7 with the MATE desktop from the EPEL repo and it looks and feels just like gnome2 (because it is). It's worth going with 7 just because it has a longer lifespan and better hardware support. CentOS 6 recently went into what's known as "Production Phase 3" upstream at RHEL which means it will only receive critical security updatesuntil it goes EOL in about 3 years time. Given how serious some of the vulnerabilities marked as "important" are (and those don't get fixed), I wouldn't want to run it as a desktop any more.

That the beauty of Linux. I have options! Not so with Windoze.
