6.2 is from December 2011 and is now 6 years old. No-one should run 6.2. It's ancient and riddled with high severity security vulnerabilities. Your screenshot shows several earlier failures in the boot cycle but it is impossible to tell why they occurred. If your system uses a GUI then it's possible that the GUI has failed to start and that the system is available via ssh already in which case you should logon remotely and read through your log files in /var/log to see if there any clues there as to what has happened. If it isn't available via ssh then you should try booting in run level 3 and see if you can login that way and if not then boot from the installation media in rescue mode and read the logs that way.

Whatever you do, it is not safe to run that system on 6.2. You should plan to update to 6.9 ASAP.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

Thank you Trevor for your quick reply.

Unfortunately even I am able to get ssh access, for some reason the root password is not accepting ; it says access denied.
Is there any way I can reset root password in this condition ?

Is it possible to upgrade from 6.2 to 6.9 without re installing ?
Even the GU is not working, hope the data is safe in the server.

Thank you in advance.

If you boot into run level 1 you should be "logged in" without a password, and you can use passwd to reset your password:

Before upgrading to 6.9 I would make a backup.

Also try Ctrl-Alt-F2 to switch to another virtual terminal and see if you can login there.

Dear Tunk and Trevor

I did Ctrl+Alt+F2 and wen to new shell; tried to login with root and existing password. It didn't allow me; says login incorrect.

I did boot in single user mode and got a firefart shell prompt as shown in the attached screenshot. Not able to change root password.

Is it kind of hacking or something ?

How can we overcome this situation ?
I will be happy If I get the data out and setup and a new server.

Please help.

There's certainly something very broken about that but it's impossible to tell (or rule out) that it's been hacked from the information you've given so far. It's possible but it could also be diisk corruption or that someone has installed a package update that wasn't intended to be run on your version of CentOS or that they've done a sourcebuild for something and overwritten a bunch of important system libraries.

You can investigate further by looking at the various logs in /var/log - the files messages, secure and yum.log might be the best to start with. If you cannot determine what happened then it is probably best to assume that it was a hack and proceed accordingly - back up your data, inspect it carefully to make sure it doesn't have any compromises that will re-infect the system once it's restored - reinstall the system from scratch and bring it up to date then restore your data.

Thank you Trevor for your reply.

There is no way I can log in as root or any of the existing user account.

When I booted with single users, it says that invalid user "root" as mentioned in my last screen shot of single user. Not accepting root login and its password.

Looks like I am in kind of very deep trouble. Is there any way to login and take out data ? Server has two HDD and its on RAID.

Thanks in advance

Boot using a CentOS DVD and select the "Rescue" option

Does /etc/passwd exist? If it doesn't, can you add one with the contents

root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash

then chmod it 644. See if any other /etc/passwd* files exist that could be used to copy back an older version.

From single user mode you can attach a USB drive and copy off any data that is essential
