Working BaseURL and repository for Centos 6

Post by sujith0602 » 2018/03/07 11:37:25

Hello Support,

I have to use Centos 6.5 because of a requirement. But I am not able to update or install any packages. Can I please get a working repository URL for Centos6?

Whatever that "requirement" is, don't do it. CentOS 6.5 came out in December 2013 so is now over 4 years old. It has accumulated numerous high severity security vulnerabilities over those 4 years and is extremely insecure and should not be used. Go back to your supplier or whoever it is that's telling you to use 6.5 and ask them if they will indemnify you against all the potential losses your company could suffer by being hacked due to using outdated and insecure software. They won't? No and nor should you.

If you must use 6.5 then you can find the archived repos on vault.centos.org but, really, the answer is DO NOT DO IT.

If you want to see the full list of nasties that you will be exposed to by doing this, hit the Redhat errata pages for RHEL6 and look at all errata marked as "Important" and "Critical" that have dates after the start of December 2013 when 6.5 was first released. There are 17 pages of critical updates since Dec 2013 and another 28 pages of errata marked as Important. At 10 items per page that's 450 severe security related bugs that are known by hackers and are not fixed in CentOS 6.5.

Ask Equifax if it's a good idea to have unpatched systems lying around your estate?
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

Where did you find instructions saying that it needed CentOS 6.5? I did a quick google and got lots of links telling me that it was supported on CentOS 7 and they have their own yum repo to allow it to be installed. I found instructions on how to get their yum repo on http://docs.cloudstack.apache.org/proje ... repository and looking in the url that they say in that, I see that both CentOS 6 and 7 have packages available with CentOS 7 packages being version 4.11 and dated mid-Feb 2018 and CentOS 6 having version 4.9 packages dated at the start of 2017. From that POV, CentOS 7 sounds like a much better choice.

In any case, given the use case, do not use CentOS 6.5.
