I have been using CentOS 6.7 for over two years, and recently tried to upgrade it to CentOS 7.0,
but it didn't go well so I am considering installing the CentOS 7.0 OS using the install DVD.
I can still boot into CentOS 6.9 and do some work by the way.
Below is my current disk state
ckim@stph45:~] df -k
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda3 226026064 103123696 111413856 49% /
tmpfs 32958032 0 32958032 0% /dev/shm
/dev/sda1 201454560 4911408 186303152 3% /tools
/dev/sdc1 4806455048 387782752 4174511784 9% /home1
/dev/sdc2 4806466304 18391096 4543914032 1% /home2
/dev/sdb1 1922727280 844039564 981012116 47% /home
If I install with CentOS7 DVD, will it install the OS in /dev/sda3 (current partition where / is located)?
It's been a while I fresh installed ubuntu twice so I forgot the process, but vaguely remember partitioning the disk for OS install.
Does the install program ask me to select the disk and partition it before the OS install? and let me use the old disks /dev/sdab and /dev/sdc(which has two partitions) intact?
I have some important files backed up on /home2, but if I lose /home2 during the install, it'll give me some pain.
If there is a chance I can lose /home1 or /home2, I'll consider backing up the files to my windows machine.
(of course really import files are kept in git repositories)
Just a brief explanation for my case would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Disconnect the cables for sdb and sdc (absolutely no chance of deleting/overwriting data).
Install CentOS 7.4 on sda.
Reconnect sdb and sdc, and manually update /etc/fstab.

If you have important data that you cannot afford to lose then back it up separately on a different machine before you start.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

Ok, that sounds safe. I have attached a big disk earlier this year and I think I can do it tomorrow. I also read https://www.slashroot.in/what-uuid-used-fstab to make sure.Disconnect the cables for sdb and sdc (absolutely no chance of deleting/overwriting data).

Yes, it's always safe to backup files as much as possible. I'll bakcup some really important files to my windows PC before the install. If you have important data that you cannot afford to lose then back it up separately on a different machine before you start.
Thank you both!
