Upgrading CentOS 6 to 7

Post by Alexegin » 2018/05/19 22:10:34

Hello.
Is there the official way to upgrade CentOS 6 (6.9, Linux centos.home 2.6.32-696.28.1.el6.x86_64) to CentOS 7.x?
For example, using the tool like CentOS Upgrade Tool (https://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/CentOSUpgradeTool), but it marked BROKEN ...
Thank you very much in advance.

No. There is no way to do that. The packages you mention are unmaintained and have not been touched since they were first built using the original RHEL upgrade tool for 7.0. There have been significant changes in the operating system since then that have broken those tools and they will kill your system if you can even get them to work at all. The packages they were built from in RHEL have been amended numerous times since our versions were built and no-one has stepped forward to maintain the existing ones or to build the newer versions from RHEL (they will require significant effort and changes to make them work for CentOS).

That means a reinstall from scratch which has its advantages anyway since it gives you a nice clean slate to work on and no old cruft to forget about.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.
Info for USB installs on http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/InstallFromUSBkey
CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.
