Login doesn't commit after enter-key

Post by developerbirqi » 2018/08/28 12:47:56

Hi,

After rebooting a old NAS for a friend off my I got this inlog screen showing
"CentOS 6.3 (final)"
"Kernel 2.6.32-279.5.2..."
<servername> login:

When I start typing my keystrokes are visable but when hitting enter the cursor goes to a new line (no commit)
After a while "password:" is showing but also the same issue, hitting enter won't commit the gaven input.

I tried: CTRL-J and/or CTRL-M as replacement for Enter Key,
(With CRTL-V followed by enter is showed "^M"

Anyone can help me to log in here?

PS. I'm kinda new in this.

Regards,
Rinaldo

So the delay sounds like your machine is either extremely busy or perhaps that you have another problem like a failing hard disk that's difficult for it to read and takes many retries. You should not expect to see any data on screen when you enter the password, it's an invisible field and what you enter into it is hidden to stop people from spying how many characters etc are in your password.

Does it let you login if you wait long enough?

Your next problem after you manage to login is that your system is ancient and riddled with known bugs, both security and not. CentOS 6.3 dates from mid-2012 so you are missing about 6 years of updates. Once you can login you should run yum update to download and apply all missing patches and get your system up to date and on 6.10.

Hi Trevor,

Indeed after enter I need to wait (longggggg)
Then I'm able to do some stuff in the commandline like ls etc.

The goal is to have a copy of all data on the disks to read with microsoft OS.
But its enough for today. Better luck next time.

Thanks for ypour response

There may be clues as to the problems in /var/log/messages and /var/log/secure
