Post by Lin Wai Htet » 2019/07/22 03:38:39

I need to upgrade from Centos 6.7 to 7 in my data center servers.
Can I know I can do it?

No. There is no upgrade path from CentOS 6 to 7. You need to backup your data, reinstall the system, reinstall your apps, restore your data.

No, is this real? Now I understand why all of our devops people keep insisting on Ubuntu.
Are there any plans to remedy this issue?

Unlike Ubuntu, CentOS versions are supported for 10 years from initial release. When a new version does come along about every 5 years it's usually got enough differences in it to make migration from one to the other difficult if not impossible. Since the lifetime of a version is 10 years, we do really expect you to install it, run with it until the hardware you put it on dies of old age and then migrate to a new box and install a new version.

What about Redhat's upgrade tool?

There's all sorts of google links about it (here's a sample):

Redhat's upgrade tool works for some RHEL installs but nothing complex. It does not work on CentOS. The code would need changing to work on CentOS and despite numerous calls for volunteers to step up to maintain it there have been zero takers.

There is no upgrade path.

Bummer.

I'm still on 6 because

* My CentOS system does so many things... the best move would be to build a second system and slowly migrate.
This system is so central to my network. (File server, dev destkop, MythTV system, Plex Server, DNS/DHCP, Samba Server, Vbox VMs)
Ugh.

And -- CentOS 7 (well, RHEL 7 too) last I installed - I can't stand the GNOME (3?) desktop. I much prefer what's in CentOS/RHEL 6. :(
(I've heard this is fixed -- but have yet to test it).

So that makes all this a big project and I have so many things demanding my immediate attention (like work). :(

EPEL contains "MATE Desktop" which is gnome2 by another name.
