Upgrading CentOS 6.1 to 6.3

Post by jonej132 » 2019/07/25 18:22:49

Is it possible to select which version I upgrade to? Or by updating do I automatically get updated to the most current version?

Why would you like to get 6.3 - it's seven years old with seven years of accumulated security problems.

a) you shouldn't be running 6.1 in the first place! It's from May 2011 so is 8 years old and absolutely riddled with high severity security vulnerabilities.

b) you shouldn't update to 6.3 either since that's only 1 year newer than 6.1 and nearly as insecure.

The only supported and safe version to run is 6.10 plus the latest updates.

Why would you even think about staying on ancient versions like that?

You should also be aware that CentOS 6 itself has less than 18 months of life left before it goes out of support and all security patches stop becoming available. If it's taken you this long to get around to patching from one minor version to the next then you should definitely start planning to migrate to a newer version ASAP.
CentOS 5 died in March 2017 - migrate NOW!
CentOS 6 goes EOL sooner rather than later, get upgrading!

The crazy question came from a client specifically requesting to upgrade to that version number. I will advise them that is not the best solution and a change to 7+ will be there only real decision with CentOS 6 becoming unsupported.
