Upgrade to Centos 6 from Centos 5

Post by jabalv » 2011/07/11 17:26:29

Hi. I have some CentOS 5.6 servers, they all running OAS 10g servers. I`m thinking about upgrading to CentOS 6 and oracle weblogic. Is there is any way how to do that smoothly?

Short answer, no.

Longer answer--RH and friends (clones?) don't support upgrades between versions. Fedora developers are working on it (but there are smaller differences, due, in part to the quicker release dates) and it's getting there, but still
fairly unreliable.

Recommended practice is to back up data and do a fresh install.

There is a guide here http://planet.admon.org/update-centos-4-to-centos-5-remotely/ how to upgrade
from Centos 4 to 5.

Maybe there is a similar off-the-record/unofficial/risky way for 5 to 6 ?

Consider whether an "upgrade" from windoze 98 (or 2K) to windoze xp would work properly ?
Unlikely. Much better to reformat the hdd.
Sorry to mention Redmond, but the upgrade issues are similar.

Don't confuse an Operating system in which you plug a USB device (Win95/98) and the output is a blue screen :P with
an operating system based on packages.

It's doable, like debian, slackware, fedora, ubuntu, and so on... of course you will end up with many
old RPMs but unusable just taking up space on the disk... But you can also handle them with rpm and remove them.

I just don't know which packages are needed locally (python ? yum ? rpm ? centos-release ?)
before you proceed.

I would be also interested in this. Motivation is basically that I don't have the option to install from scratch, because I am on a OpenVZ VPS. It will probably take many more months until my (cheap) host will offer that option.
