missing .src.rpm's?

Post by cschanzle » 2011/07/12 14:16:25

Greetings and thanks for the 6.0 efforts!

Seems we're missing a lot of .src.rpm's from http://mirror.centos.org/centos/6/os/SRPMS/Packages/

Even if the thought was to go upstream for the sources, not all packages marked as "modified" in the release notes are in the above location.

missing .src.rpm's?

Post by toracat » 2011/07/12 15:54:27

From what I heard, the srpms packages are being fed to the mirrors at a slow pace and those with centos modifications were given a higher priority.

Is there any update on when the packages will be uploaded to the http://mirror.centos.org/centos/6/os/SRPMS/Packages/ directory? The directory doesn't have much in it now.

Thanks in advance.

A week and a half later, and the mirrors still have only 14 src RPMs for the base packages. This is not "a slow pace," it's no movement at all. What's the deal? Surely the src RPMs exist somewhere. The aggregate size should be of the same order of magnitude as that of the binaries, and those were released all at once.

This is no minor issue. All user-end considerations aside, it is likely that the CentOS Project is violating the license terms of many of the component packages by distributing binaries without making the sources available, or at least providing instructions for getting them. Project URLs in the binary RPMs' metadata are typically not sufficient because the information available that way does not include patches, build options, etc.. CentOS is not fulfilling its obligations.
