black screen before login

Post by awkawaii » 2016/07/21 22:28:08

Hi,

I just recently rebooted my laptop, but the screen turns black after loading the CentOS logo but before the login screen.
The following is the output when I try to run startx from the terminal as root using ctrl-alt-f2:

hostname: Host name lookup failure
xauth: file /root/.serverauth.3233 does not exist

If anyone could help, I would be extremely grateful. I'm relatively new to Linux and CentOS so I'm not sure how to solve this problem.

How did you previously install the nvidia drivers?
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.
Info for USB installs on http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/InstallFromUSBkey
CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

I'm actually not sure about the drivers. When I tried running nvidia-smi before, it told me that the driver version is 352.93. When I tried installing the nvidia-x11-drv and kmod-nvidia files from elrepo repository, it gave me errors about dependencies. From what I remember, nvidia-x11-drv had a dependency on kmod-nvidia and kmod-nvidia had a dependence on some xorg nvidia file. However, I couldn't find the xorg nvidia file in the repository.

I have the same issue after installing the cuda tool kit from:

https://developer.nvidia.com/cuda-downloads

Please could you reply the full fix, if you found one yourself awkawaii?

Not just fixed? Cause this way it helps nobody. ;)
