​Hi,
Does the web server php script send mysql password unencrypted to the mysql server, if so how to secure this.

Not unless you have really really bad php programmers.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.
