i finally moved on from 6.7 and went to 6.9, thanks to the help i found here as my rpm db was compromised and i had been putting it off.
after moving to 6.9, ntpd messed me around as i lost my /etc/localtime setting and this upset my site, especially AWStats plus a bunch of silly timestamps on my system logs.
just a heads up.
6.7 to 6.9 unexpected issue(s)
Re: 6.7 to 6.9 unexpected issue(s)
The /etc/localtime file has nothing to do with ntpd. It is more likely that you had symlinked /etc/localtime to the relevant zone file under /usr/share/zoneinfo and this is not the correct thing to do on CentOS 6 (though it is on CentOS 7). Check the output from rpm -V tzdata and if you see any output then you shoud yum reinstall it after fixing the symlink. To do that, rm the /etc/localtime symlink and then cp the right file from /usr/share/zoneinfo to it. Then yum reinstall tzdata afterwards.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

Re: 6.7 to 6.9 unexpected issue(s)
oh, ok. I did symlink it because a few CentOS 6 tutorials told me to.
rpm -V tzdata returned nothing.
i eventually repeated my symlink but i'm not worried because the next move will be to CentOS 7, most likely.
I'm all paid up to run my website (moving to SMF 2.0.14;requires PHP 5.4 at the minimum) for at least another 3 years and 6.9 looks mature and stable enough to tide me over.
thanks again for all your help ... I am an old IBM mainframe guy and this Linux stuff is still all new to me.

Re: 6.7 to 6.9 unexpected issue(s)
Be aware that CentOS 6 entered production phase 3 on May 10th 2017. This means that only critical security updates will be issued for it in the next 2.5 years before it goes EOL completely in 2020. Any updates marked important or less may not get fixed at all.

noted. My main concern is mainly the security aspect (and keeping my forum current) so that suits me.
