kvm/qemu system freeze after update to kernel-2.6.32-754.3.5.el6.x86_64

Post by fatcharly@gmx.de » 2018/08/22 16:39:43

Hi,

I´m runnig a centOS 6.10 a kvm/qemu host with drbd (there is a sister-host as hot-standby). Today I did an update via yum and everything looked fine after a reboot. But then under kernel-2.6.32-754.3.5.el6.x86_64 the host system freezed completly after the start of a virtual system (started via virsh).
I can start all virtual systems with no problem when I boot the system with the older 2.6.32-754.2.1.el6.x86_64 and all installed updates.

Which informations should i provide ?

This is the list of the last update:

Which CPU model do you have? See /proc/cpuinfo

Sounds like a known problem with older cpu models judging by the G5 bit of that. G5 would have shipped with processors from the era that seem to be affected. RH know about the problem and have provided a test kernel to the original reporter which seems to fix the problem, the rest of us have to wait for it to be released. If you have a RH support contract then you should be able to ask for the fix too but otherwise I think you'll need to boot the older kernel and wait until they release the fixed one.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

yes, youre right it`s an older machine from about 2008. So the problem is known and (because I got no RH-support) I have to wait for the next kernel which will fix this problem.

Thanks for your input and kind regards !
