I am trying to install a software package - Ansys - using a Centos 6.4 based Virtual Machine.
I installed all the dependencies required for the software in Centos using yum commands.
When I execute the script for the software using ./INSTALL - I get an error saying that it cannot execute a binary file.
I put the software on a USB and on the Virtual Machine drive in Centos and tried to install it.
Do I have to mount the USB to install it ?
Uname tells me I have CentOS 6.4 Final with uname -m telling me i686.
How can I fix this ?
Installing Ansys Software in Centos 6.4 VM
Re: Installing Ansys Software in Centos 6.4 VM
Do not run 6.4. It is positively dangerous and needs patching. You wouldn't run Windows 98 on anything, don't run 6.4 either. Since it's already installed, running yum update will update you to 6.10 which is the current (and probably last) CentOS 6 version. CentOS 6.4 dates back to early 2013 so is coming on for 6 years out of date and there have been numerous security related problems found and fixed in that time.
How did you transfer the software to the USB stick? What filesystem does it use on the USB stick? Are you sure that it does not require a 64 bit system? i686 means your current one is 32 bit. What is the output from the command file ./INSTALL ?When I execute the script for the software using ./INSTALL - I get an error saying that it cannot execute a binary file.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

Re: Installing Ansys Software in Centos 6.4 VM
Hello,
Because of my set up I have to stick with 6.4 so I can't upgrade it - actually I am not sure. I am worried if I upgrade my setup and software will stop working. I have had bad experience with upgrading Virtual Machine Operating Systems and software not working.
I just copied the installation to a USB.
I also tried doing the installation on the Virtual Machine Drive - I needed the USB since my Virtual Machine has limited space so I thought I could install it from the USB to save space.
USB file system is NTFS - I changed it from FAT32 to be able to copy larger files.
When I ran the ./INSTALL from the USB or from the Virtual Machine's drive I got the same error (below).
I attached the results of running the installation script ./INSTALL here.
Thank you.

Re: Installing Ansys Software in Centos 6.4 VM
Is SELinux running? Ansys usually get permissions correct, so I doubt that this is a missing o:x or u:x

Hello,
I am not sure what SELinux is and how to check if it is running.
Thank you.

Re: Installing Ansys Software in Centos 6.4 VM
Oops, the software I need is 64 bit and my VM CentOS 6.4 is 32 bit.
How dangerous is going from 6.4 to 6.10 - will software stop working ?
How much more dangerous is "upgrading" or changing the 32 bit install to 64 bit - or is that just crazy.
Thank you.

Re: Installing Ansys Software in Centos 6.4 VM
You can't upgrade a 32 bit version to a 64 bit one, it's a reinstall. In which case, you might as well start by downloading the 6.10 64 bit media to begin with.
The whole rationale behind RHEL (and CentOS since it's a rebuild of RHEL) is to keep things stable for the entire 10 year life span of each major version (6, 7 etc). There should be no problems running on newer point releases.
